Doctor’s Day 2025
“Develop your personality, so that you may leave your individual mark in whatever sphere you are privileged to serve.”
There are few people in life who meet us at our most vulnerable moments. They don’t even know our names but still offer their full attention, care, and expertise. Doctors do just that, every single day. On July 1st, in India, we celebrate these white lab coat heroes. National Doctor’s Day is a day is more than just a date on the calendar. It’s a day to celebrate the courage, skill, and humane touch that every doctor brings into their work, be it in bustling city hospitals or remote health camps, as a lifesavers as a healers, as a god in disguise.
Why July 1 is celebrated as Doctor’s Day in India?
July 1st marks the birth and death anniversary of Dr. B.C. Roy, one of India’s most respected physicians freedom fighter, and the second Chief Minister of West Bengal. Born and departed on the same day (July 1, 1882 – July 1, 1962), Dr. Roy was renowned for treating countless poor and underprivileged patients selflessly, often without charging fees. He played a significant role in advancing public health infrastructure and established several hospitals, including the Chittaranjan National Cancer Institute (CNCI).
Glimpse into the History of National Doctors’ Day
National Doctor’s Day was first observed in India in 1991, established by the Government of India to honor Dr. Bidhan Chandra Roy. Dr. Roy wasn’t just a medical luminary; he was a visionary leader, educator, and social reformer. His immense contributions in establishing institutions like the Indian Medical Association and Medical Council of India laid the foundation for modern medical practice in the country.
His commitment to public welfare earned him the Bharat Ratna in 1961, India’s highest civilian award. National Doctor’s Day is a tribute to his legacy and a broader acknowledgment of the vital role played by doctors in society.
What is the Theme of Doctor’s Day 2025?
Every year, Doctor’s Day carries a theme that reflects the times we live in. This year’s theme is, “Behind the Mask: Who Heals the Healers?”
In a post-pandemic world where healthcare systems continue to face challenges, this year’s theme urges us to look beyond the lab coats and stethoscopes. It draws our attention to the inner struggles of doctors & shines a light on the emotional and mental well-being of doctors themselves.
