Who started National Nurses Week?

The earliest proposal dates back to 1953, when Dorothy Sutherland, an official from the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare, suggested to President Eisenhower that a “Nurse Day” be proclaimed. Although it didn’t receive official approval at the time, the seed was planted.

Over the years, several more attempts were made. In 1954, National Nurses Week was observed from October 11-16, marking the 100th anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s mission to Crimea, where she famously transformed military hospitals. But it wasn’t institutionalized. It wasn’t until 1982, however, that President Ronald Reagan officially signed a proclamation for National Nurses Day. 

But it wasn’t until 1993, when the American Nurses Association made it official & evolved it into the weeklong celebration we cherish today.
